A newly formed Merton Primary school has received an excellent Ofsted report in only its second term.
West Wimbledon Primary School, created in September 2002 as part of the Schools Reorganisation project, was assessed earlier this year and has been described by Ofsted as rapidly improving school with some good features.
The inspectors have recognised the significant distance travelled in such a short time and have recognised the enormous amount of work that has been achieved by the pupils, staff and governors.
The key points in the report state:
· Teaching across the school is good or better at every stage.
· Pupils attitudes and behaviour is good.
· Foundation Stage children get a good start.
· Children make good progress in all subjects.
· At Key Stage 1 there has been a significant improvement in standards from last year.
· The You Can Do It programme permeates every aspect of school life.
· The school’s approach to cultural and ethnic diversity is good.
· The school cares for its children very well and partnership with parents is a strength.
· Information and communication technology (ICT) was judged to be a major strength of the school.
· Treetops, a unit for children on the autistic spectrum, provides good learning and support for its children.
The report did highlight two areas where the school needs to improve and work is already underway to address these issues. The inspectors felt and improvement of standards at end of Key Stage 2 is needed but recognised the progress made by pupils since September.
The other area is attendance. The Inspectors reported that despite the school doing everything in its power to improve pupil attendance, the school attendance figure of 93.4 per cent still falls below the national average of 95 per cent.
The school will be working closer with parents to improve this figure and will be looking at term time holiday requests in particular.
