Merton Council has received notification from UNISON of their intention to take industrial action from Monday 1st December through to Friday 12th December 2003 inclusive. Staff from the Council Tax department will be taking part.
This will have an impact on the Council’s ability to operate this service, with only 3 staff out of a normal compliment of 40 plus. In preparation for this, summonses for non-payment for hearings on the 27th November and 4th December have been cancelled. The next Court Hearings are due on the 22nd and 28th January 2004.
The Court Hearing for non-payment of Business Rates planned for the 11th December has been cancelled, with all cases being adjourned until the 18th December. All the businesses concerned have been informed by letter.
Councillor Mark Allison, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said:
“Any action that impacts on the delivery of services to residents is extremely unwelcome.
“The Council Tax service will be affected for two weeks from Monday 1 December, and claims for rebates are likely to face delays. Residents can ring our One Number contact centre on 020 8274 4901, where we will be able to deal with general enquiries. Unfortunately, this may result in some short queues on the line, for which I apologise.”
