Merton Council’s Trading standards are warning that a new scam is being delivered to unsuspecting residents advising them that they have won hundreds of thousands of euros in the Spanish El Gordo Sweepstake Lottery S.A.
Consumers are asked to fill out a lottery payments processing form, which includes their bank details, on the pretence that winnings will be transferred to their bank account. However, what happens in reality is that money is actually withdrawn from the account by the perpetrators rather than being paid in.
Merton Council’s Trading standards are liasing with The Office of Fair Trading who are currently collating information to pass on to the Spanish police.
Ian Murrell, Merton Council’s Commercial and Trading Standards Manager said: “Residents should be extremely careful about giving their bank account details to anyone. This is yet another scam from abroad that seeks to deprive Merton residents of their money by making false prize claims.”
