Residents are being warned by Merton Trading Standards of cowboy builders operating in Merton following a number of incidents sprung on unsuspecting homeowners in the Morden and Mitcham Common Area.
Teams of building sharks are paying unsolicited calls to homeowners asking if they want their drives resurfaced, only to go ahead with the work without an agreement. On challenging the trader residents will find the workmen argue that a verbal agreement was reached.
In the majority of cases the homeowners have felt they had no alternative but to go ahead with the work. The standard of the work completed by these cowboy builders has proved to be very poor and often the price of the job increases as the work goes on.
To avoid these issues Merton Councils Trading Standards suggests:
~ Do not enter into a conversation with traders who call at your home without prior appointment
~ Do not to be tempted to employee builders just because they claim they are doing work for your neighbour
~ On planning a building project obtain quotes from a number of different companies and try to use traders who are registered with trade federations.
To report any problems with such traders or to receive advice please call Merton’s Trading Standards Department on 020 8545 4018.
