Merton’s planning department has been named London’s top performing team for a second year running as only four of its planning decisions have been overturned by the planning inspectorate.
A report published on 25 July 2005 by the Government’ s Planning Inspectorate, shows how each local planning authority in England has performed in terms of defending it’s planning decisions at appeal.
Merton must be getting its decisions right because between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2005 the planning inspectorate overturned only 11.76% of Merton’s planning decisions, compared to a London average of 30%. Not only does this make Merton the top performing planning team in London, but puts them within the top 15 teams in the country.
Councillor Philip Jones, Chair of the Planning Applications Committee, said “This is a great achievement, which demonstrates the quality of planning decision s made by both officers and members.
“The results highlight the strength of our UDP policies, which are used to defend our position at appeal, whilst proving our decisions are initially of a high standard.”
