Merton’s Neighbourhood Wardens are working together with bike shops in the borough’s areas patrolled by wardens to promote the ‘Keep your cycle safe’ initiative.
Residents can drop into shops like ‘Active Bikes’ in Wimbledon to pick up a leaflet offering advice on how to keep their cycle safe.
Wardens such as Wimbledon Town Centre Warden Neil Robinson are also using UV pens to mark bikes with personal information like a postcode or a piece of factual information similarly unique. This helps police find the owner of bikes once they are recovered.
Peter Jones, manager of Active Bikes in Wimbledon said:
“You need to spend around 10 per cent of the value of your bicycle on a lock to ensure it is safe.”
