An exciting project aimed at driving forward the regeneration of Mitcham town centre has been launched in Merton.
Mitcham Means Business will create a regeneration office in Mitcham town centre and is a result of £850,000 funding from the London Development Agency’s Local Opportunities Fund.
The new regeneration office will help manage the town centre and offer businesses support services, such as marketing. Training will be provided to local people on how to write CVs, fill in application forms and how to do well in job interviews.
Councillor Diane Neil-Mills, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration said:
“The funding will allow us to begin to build the pillars for the physical and economic regeneration of Mitcham town centre. It is important that existing businesses remain integrated in the town centre and we want to provide as much support as possible to ensure that this happens. I am grateful for the work of the partnership, which has been instrumental in the progress achieved to date.”
Merton Council plans to use some of the money to develop a marketing strategy for Mitcham that will promote the town centre to shoppers and businesses. The project will work with the market traders in Mitcham to develop the market’s potential and to diversify the products on offer.
Mitcham Means Business also aims to replace outdated street furniture in the town centre, clean up Fair Green and plant lavender. The historic grade II listed clock tower will be refurbished in the town centre. A new market square is to be created and noticeboards are to be provided to keep local people, stakeholders and businesses informed about the redevelopment of Mitcham town centre.
The council will work closely with partners including Merton Chamber of Commerce, Merton College, Prospects and Volunteer Centre Merton, to ensure Mitcham Means Business is a resounding success for the local community.
The Mitcham Means Business regeneration office is located at 177 London Road, Mitcham, CR4 2JB. For further information, please call 020 8274 5786.
