Merton residents can make the difference in a child’s or young person’s life by becoming their foster carer.
The borough needs carers who can commit their time to provide a safe and stable family environment for children in care while their own parents are unable to do so – especially in the case of teenagers, sibling groups and children with special needs or disabilities.
There are different types of fostering – on a short-term or long-term basis – depending on the child’s needs. Respite carers are also needed, to look after children for short periods on a regular basis. This gives parents a break, helping them to cope with the strains of life.
There is no such thing as a typical foster carer – Merton welcomes carers from all cultures and backgrounds, regardless of marital status, sexuality, race or religion.

Councillor Debbie Shears, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, says: “There are many children in the borough in need of love and support. Merton Council is urging residents to open their hearts and give a positive contribution to a child’s life that can last forever.”
