All space cadets and alien adventurers are invited to the lift off of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge on 17 July, taking place in Merton’s libraries.

With the action packed sci-fi theme of ‘Space Hop’, youngsters across the borough can travel through space and time, battle alien life forms and learn about the planets while improving their confidence with reading.

The fun and achievable challenge encourages children to read six books over the summer holidays and rewards readers with prizes, bookmarks and stickers throughout their journey. 2,905 young people signed up in 2009 and this year’s cosmic adventures look set to be bigger than ever.

Each library is hosting a range of events from Friday 16 July, including treasure hunts, space themed craft sessions, alien biscuit and cake decorating and much more. Pop into your local library or visit the website to find out the times and dates of the many free events held as part of the summer reading challenge.

Merton Council’s cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said ‘We are encouraging as many children as possible to get involved in the summer reading challenge. Merton’s libraries are full of exciting children’s books and the libraries run lots of free, fun activities throughout the summer. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to enjoy reading and have fun at the same time’.
