Biofriendly weed killer trial in Merton

As part of our efforts to build a more sustainable future in Merton, the Council is beginning a trial of more biofriendly weed killers to test the viability of using alternative products which are kinder to the environment.

The trial will use weed killers that are glyphosate-free and made from naturally-occurring compounds to test their effectiveness in managing weeds. They can also be applied using low water amounts.

The trial will start this month in Wandle ward, which has been chosen because of its smaller size to help with faster application. The ward also has five Garden Streets, where no glyphosate weed killer is used, to be the trial’s control areas.

Glyphosate products are currently used in the borough. The chemical ingredient is licensed by the HSE and is commonly found in products used to control weeds. However, concerns have been raised about the impact of glyphosate on the environment.

Analysis of Merton’s use of weed control, plus evidence from trials undertaken by other local authorities, showed that using a chemical-based alternative to glyphosate was the most pragmatic and financially viable way of managing weeds at scale. The products selected for the trial are Katoun Gold and Chikara.

Cabinet Member for Local Environment, Green Spaces and Climate Change Councillor Natasha Irons said:

“We’re always trying to do better for our environment, and we listened to residents’ views about using alternatives to glyphosate weed killers.

“I’m pleased that a trial of more biofriendly weed killers is starting in Wandle ward, and we will be keeping a close eye on the results.

“Moving to glyphosate-free products will reduce our impact on the local environment and help to build a sustainable future for Merton.”
