Merton celebrates announcement of new SEND free school provider

Merton Council has announced a significant milestone in the provision of education for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in our borough. The Department for Education (DfE) has named OHCAT (Orchard Hill College Academy Trust) as the provider for a new special school in Merton.

Current SEND schools in Merton have consistently received commendable ratings of “good” or “outstanding” from Ofsted, reflecting out commitment that every child receives the support and education they deserve to thrive and reach their full potential.

The new special school will provide more invaluable specialist spaces for children whose needs require additional support beyond mainstream education within the borough.

Councillor Sally Kenny, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said, “We are delighted to welcome OHCAT as the provider for the new special school in Merton. This development represents a significant investment in the future of our children with SEND, ensuring they have access to high-quality education tailored to their individual needs.”

As we move forward with this project, Merton Council remains committed to working closely with OHCAT and the community to ensure the successful realisation of the new SEND school with the aim to open the school within 2 years.
