First Polish-born Mayor of Merton, Councillor Slawek Szczepanski, champions community unity

A new Mayor of Merton has been elected by the Council.

At a full Council meeting on Wednesday 22 May, Councillor Slawek Szczepanski, the first ever Polish-born resident to become Mayor of Merton, dedicated his time in office to inspiring others in Merton to make a difference and fulfil their hopes and dreams in our Borough.

From first coming to the UK as a joiner, Councillor Szczepanski has been a committed volunteer and worked with several charities, most notably the Polish Family Association, which he leads.

He was instrumental in helping Ukrainian refugees find their place in Merton, offering support for them and their children as they found refuge in Merton, a Borough of Sanctuary. He has promised to be a Mayor with commitment, compassion and integrity.

Councillor Szczepanski said: “I have lived in Merton since I moved to the UK, and have worked alongside many community groups, promoting cultural understanding and celebrating the rich diversity that makes this Borough unique.

“After many years of experience across our different communities, I’m honoured to have been elected to serve Merton and all its residents as Mayor, and I look forward to carrying out my duties with compassion and integrity.

“My journey from being a volunteer to this honourable position is a testament to the power of community and the importance of perseverance. In Merton no dream is too big, and no barrier unbeatable.”

Councillor Szczepanski will be assisted in his role by his consort, Kamila Dyczko. Councillor Szczepanski has chosen not to nominate a chaplain, but will instead retain prayers before council meetings from members of different faith groups.

The Mayor’s chosen charities are the UCL Hospitals Charity, in support of research into glioblastoma, and Christian CARE, committed to relieving poverty in Merton across different denominations.

The new Deputy Mayor of Merton is Councillor Brenda Fraser. As a previous Mayor, and former Cabinet member, Councillor Fraser will bring her knowledge and experience to her position as Deputy Mayor. She will be supported by her consorts Gareth and Julie Fraser.
