Garth Road Recycling Centre, in Morden, has reopened.
It was closed to the public because areas of it had become unsafe following the large fire at the neighbouring Suez recycling site on Saturday.
Site staff had worked tirelessly since the weekend to make the site safe so it could reopen.
Bookings affected by the closure were cancelled and will need to be rebooked on our website.
We understand that this closure caused inconvenience – and we apologise for this.
However, safety is our top priority and we needed to be certain that the recycling centre was safe before it could be reopened to residents.
Scheduled recycling and rubbish collections from homes have been operating as normal.
The London Fire Brigade have said that the fire was accidental. They believe that the most probable cause was a lithium-ion battery – which was in the waste and caught fire.
Batteries should not be put in household rubbish or recycling. See our website for ways to safely dispose of batteries.
Around 50 people from surrounding homes were evacuated on Saturday as a result of the fire. The council opened a rest centre, in Eastways Day Centre, for displaced residents. Council staff provided refreshments and support until the residents were able to return home by early Saturday evening.
