Dedicated e-bike parking bays planned in Merton

Merton Council aims to have dedicated parking bays in the borough from spring 2025 to provide a safer experience for everyone using our roads and footways.

These plans are in response to bikes being inconsiderately parked and blocking pedestrian access particularly for people using wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Currently in Merton, e-bike parking is free floating where users can leave the e-bikes in safe locations across the borough.

This floating parking model will end in spring 2025, and from then on, e-bikes will need to be parked in marked bays.

The council is in the process of identifying 300 designated e-bike bays which will provide space for 2,400 e-bikes and will engage the community on the proposed locations in the coming months.

To help create the bays, the council has secured funding from Transport for London which will go towards covering the cost of delivery.

This step from Merton Council is in line with a recently released Transport for London Dockless e-bike and e-scooter enforcement policy.

Cabinet Member for Transport and Cleaner Streets Councillor Stephen Alambritis MBE said: “We’re taking this step to tackle the issue of inconsiderately and dangerously parked e-bikes, to keep routes open and make sure everyone can get around safely.

“E-bikes are an important part of London’s transport mix, they’re convenient, affordable and have health benefits. I urge people to continue using e-bikes but to make sure they’re properly parked at the end of each journey.

“I welcome TfL’s newly published enforcement policy which aims to ensure London’s network of roads and footways remains accessible for all. We will work closely with TfL on their plans going forward.”
