Knife amnesty bin installed to keep Merton safe

We are proud to be working in partnership with Moat, the Metropolitan Police, the Home Office and local community organisations to introduce a secure knife amnesty bin in Pollards Hill.

The new knife amnesty bin has now been installed on the grounds of Pollards Hill Baptist Church, located on Wide Way, near South Lodge Avenue and Sherwood Park Road. The bin can be found at the front of the church.

The amnesty bin provides young people and concerned family members with a secure, anonymous option for surrendering knives and weapons without the need to visit a police station. By doing so, we aim to make our streets safer and remove dangerous items from our community.

All types of weapons can be handed in at the bin, including ninja swords, which will be completely banned from 1 August 2025.

The initiative is funded by the Home Office as part of their programme to tackle knife crime, through the installation of 37 new knife surrender bins across London and other areas of the UK.

The bin’s location was carefully chosen to be accessible while remaining discreet, to encourage maximum use. It is a fully secure unit and will be managed and emptied by the specialist organisation Words4Weapons, as needed.

Councillor Edith Macauley MBE, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: “We welcome this initiative as a meaningful step towards reducing violence and promoting community safety in Pollards Hill and beyond.

“Knife crime has devastating effects for everyone involved – the victims, the perpetrators and the community as a whole. Our message must go out loud and clear: you never make yourself safer by carrying a knife. This new amnesty bin gives anyone who has made the error of acquiring a dangerous weapon the chance to correct their mistake and make themselves safer with no questions asked.”

A mobile surrender van will be visiting Vestry Hall in London Road, Mitcham, on Friday 11 July between 9am – 1.30pm.

Young people are being urged to surrender bladed weapons, including ninja swords, to the secure vehicle, which is being supported by Word 4 Weapons and FazAmnesty. Find out more.
