Merton Council has formally recognised the bravery of local resident Stephen Crean, who intervened to stop an attacker during the mass stabbing incident on a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) train earlier this month.

Mr Crean, 61, was travelling home on 1 November when the attack took place. He stepped in to protect fellow passengers and sustained serious injuries to his left hand during the confrontation. He has since undergone surgery and continues his recovery at home.
At the Full Council Meeting on Wednesday 19 November, Mr Crean received a Merton Heroes Award from the Mayor of Merton in recognition of his extraordinary courage, which helped prevent others from being more seriously harmed.
Speaking after the presentation, the Mayor of Merton said:
It was an honour to present as Mayor of Merton a Merton Heroes award to Stephen Crean for his actions in the Huntingdon train attack and his interventions to stop the attacker. A true hero whose brave actions prevented others from serious injuries.
Councillors and attendees at the meeting offered their thanks and appreciation to Mr Crean for his bravery, quick thinking, and selfless actions.
