The council broke ground today on Merton’s new council homes at Farm Road in Morden, delivering on its ambition to build and manage the first new council homes in a generation.
Deputy Mayor of London for Housing and Residential Development Tom Copley joined Council Leader Councillor Ross Garrod, and the council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainable Development Councillor Andrew Judge, at the event.
Building new council homes will boost the availability of genuinely affordable housing in Merton – one of the biggest priorities for residents and businesses in the borough – to help them, their families and employees to continue living and working in the local area.
By 2027, the council will complete 75 new council homes at three locations in phase one of development starting with Farm Road, Morden followed by Elm Nursery and Raleigh Gardens in Mitcham. The new homes sit in the heart of existing communities, close to nearby shops and services, and are set to provide a boost to local businesses.
Residents will save money on their utility bills thanks to an energy-efficient design that will keep the new homes insulated and warm.
These developments are supported with a multimillion-pound investment from the Mayor of London’s Affordable Homes programme 2021-2026, marking a shared commitment by the council and the Greater London Authority to deliver more homes, more quickly, for local people.
The site at Farm Road will have 18 new council homes made up of one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as larger houses for families.
The council plans to build more council homes in the future, managing them directly for the benefit of our borough’s residents.
London’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development Tom Copley said:
“The Mayor and I are doing everything we can to deliver more homes of all tenures, and City Hall funding will help to deliver the first new council homes in Merton in a generation, with almost 100 new, energy-efficient homes built across the borough.
I’m looking forward to seeing spades in the ground at Farm Road and continuing to work closely with the council to provide the affordable homes we desperately need as we build a better and fairer London for everyone.”
Merton Council Leader Councillor Ross Garrod said:
Everyone deserves a decent place to live – a place they are proud to call home, and provides a good quality of life.
As we break ground here at Farm Road, it marks another important milestone in our work to build Merton’s first new council homes in a generation.
These homes will benefit our whole community by improving the lives of residents, and by increasing the supply of homes in Merton to help to tackle the housing crisis locally.”
