Merton is looking for young people aged between 10 and 19 years old to represent the borough this June and July in the 2001 London Heathrow Youth Games – Europe’s largest youth sport competition.
The finals will take place on the weekend of July 7th and 8th, at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre with preliminary rounds over the four previous weekends. Athletes must either live in or go to school in Merton to be eligible to take part.
Merton has had successes in previous years, winning medals and placings in: –
Badminton – team gold in 1999 and individual boys gold in 2000
Judo – individual male silver and individual female bronze in 2000.
Mini Games – team gold in 1999 and silver in 2000
Sailing – team silver in 1999 and team third place in 2000
The London Heathrow Games feature over thirty-five sports. The wide variety includes everything from angling to weightlifting as well as the popular Watersports Regatta where young people can show their skills at sailing, rowing, kayaking, bell boat and dragon boat racing.
