Merton Council is pleased to announce that it has appointed a new Director of Education, Leisure and Libraries.
Sue Evans, who is currently Assistant Director of Lifelong Learning at East Sussex County Council, has been invited to join Merton after being successful in a recruitment process that attracted nearly 30 applicants.
Mrs Evans has been employed in local government for ten years and before that she was a primary school teacher and a headteacher in the London Borough of Greenwich. She will join Merton on 1 August.
The Education, Leisure and Libraries Department has more than 3,500 staff and oversees 63 schools, 62 parks and open spaces, seven libraries, four cemeteries and 18 allotment sites. Sue Evans will take over from Acting Director Tony Lenney.
Roger Paine, Chief Executive of Merton Council, said: “I am very pleased we have secured the talents of Sue Evans.
“The directorship of the Education, Leisure and Libraries department is a wide ranging and demanding position and I very confident that Sue has the right experience and skills to take Merton forward and will lead by example.
“Sue will be joining Merton at a time of great transition in our education system with the Schools Reorganisation Project gathering momentum and I am sure she will inspire the high standard of work achieved by the department to continue and reach new heights.”
