Fraudster found then fined

Merton Council tackles benefit fraud

Merton Council has successfully prosecuted a 43 year old woman for illegally claiming benefit while receiving an income from the sub-letting of her property. Carol Ann Upham was fined £200 and ordered to pay towards the costs. Ms Upham who pleaded guilty, has subsequently repaid £4,400 back to the Council in overpaid benefit.

The fraud was exposed when officers of the Audit Section discovered that Ms Upham was receiving an income from sub-letting her house while living with her partner and claiming benefit.

Ms Upham was found guilty at Wimbledon Magistrates Court of two offences of furnishing false information under Section 111 of the Social Security Administration Act 1992.

Chris Johnson, Head of Audit, said: ” Ms Uphams deception lasted for 18 months and cost council tax payers £6,190.70. This successful prosecution is a message that benefit fraudsters will be caught and prosecuted.”
