Merton hosts swimming championship heat

Merton Council is this year’s host for the Area II heats of the London Inter-borough Swimming Championships on Saturday 6 October 2001.

Young people from the London Boroughs of Merton, Hounslow, Enfield and Haringey will compete at Morden Park Pool, London Road. The winning team will go through to the championship’s final due to take place on 24 November at Barnet Copthall Centre.

There are four age groups competing- under 12, 13/14 years, 15/16 years and 17and over with 37 events in total including medley teams and a mixed free-style squadron relay.

The London Inter-Borough Swimming Championships is an annual event that has been running since 1973 and involves all London Boroughs. The first round contest consists of five area competitions with up to six boroughs in each heat. The winning borough of each heat is then invited to compete in the championships final.

Chris Parsloe, Leisure Development Manager said: “Merton is very pleased to be hosting this event and wishes good luck to all the competitors. We hope that people from Merton will come along and give their support to all the swimmers. I hope events like this will encourage more people to take up swimming for health, fitness and the sporting benefits.”

The Mayor of Merton will host the championships. The warm up commences at 6:00 – 6:45 pm and the competition starts at 7:00 pm.
