Residents have the chance to move ‘up North’ at council’s open day
Merton Council is holding an open day to showcase the housing currently available to our tenants in other parts of the country.
Councils and housing associations in the North and the Midlands have many properties that they are offering to Merton residents and it could be the opportunity for families, couples and single people to make a fresh start outside of London.
So far, one family has already moved from South Wimbledon to a four-bedroom house in Burnley. Merton paid for a trip to view the house and their removal costs. Merton also helped another family set up home in Leicester.
The open day will highlight what’s on offer with officers on hand to give advice and assistance to anyone who wishes to find out more about moving.
More than 20 councils and housing associations have been invited to the event on 26 November at Morden Civic Centre between noon and 7pm. They will be able to provide details of the homes in their areas and help residents take the next step.
The open day is being hosted by Merton for both local residents and residents from Sutton, Kingston, Croydon and Richmond Boroughs.
Internet facilities will be available so residents can see the types of homes available and advice on the opportunities to move to seaside and country homes will also be on hand.
Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Edith Macauley, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals and families who would like a fresh start away from the hustle and bustle of Greater London.
“Moving home is always a big step and if one is moving away from an area altogether it becomes even more of a big decision. However, our Lettings Team have organised this open day to show residents just what is out there, to help them to make an informed decision and to assist them every step of the way.”
Refreshments will be available and Siobhain McDonagh MP and the MP for Burnley, Peter Pike will be at the event.
