We’re dreaming of a green Christmas

Free christmas tree collection and recycling

After Christmas and New Year celebrations are over the council is here to help with the clean up. Merton will collect all Christmas trees free of charge for recycling and you don’t have to book a special collection.

Trees can cause damage to refuse vehicles so the council has introduced a special scheme to collect them separately from other rubbish.

A council refuse vehicle will collect trees from every street in the borough starting on Monday 7 January 2002 and over the following weeks.

To take advantage of this scheme, leave your tree out for collection at the front of your property where it is easily visible from the street. Christmas trees for collection must not be left on public land e.g. the pavement, verge, green or highway.

The trees will be shredded and turned into mulch, a natural fertilizer and ground cover to be used on the borough’s flowerbeds in preparation for the spring. Last year over 3000 trees weighing 30 tonnes were collected and recycled.
