Merton school could play football at Manchester United

Liberty Primary?s football team representing county in tournament

Pupils from one of Merton?s schools could soon be following in the footsteps of David Beckham and Ryan Giggs after scoring a success in a schools? football tournament.

The Liberty School Year 6 team recently beat off competition from other schools in the county to win the Surrey Football Championships.

The team, made up of boys aged ten and 11 from the Mitcham primary school, will now represent Surrey in the South East of England Championships and if they are victorious there, they will play in the National Finals at Manchester United?s home ground, Old Trafford.

Liberty, whose winning ways started after they secured the Merton Primary Football Tournament, can look forward to playing at the Theatre of Dreams in the summer if they can overcome the opposition in the South East Championships that take place in March.

Headteacher, Chris King, said: ?I?m tremendously proud of all the team and the hard work of the team coach, teacher Nick Page. They?ve all represented Liberty School and Merton so well.

?They?ve done brilliantly so far and just getting to this stage is an achievement in itself, but I?m sure all the boys will be really keen to step on to the pitch at Old Trafford and play where the likes of Beckham, Giggs and Keane play week in week out.

?I wish them the best for the South East Championships and I hope we can look forward to seeing a Merton team play an away game at Manchester United!?
