JOINT PRESS RELEASE:
LONDON BOROUGH OF MERTON & AMBASSADOR THEATRE GROUP
This year’s Cannizaro Festival will definitely not go ahead following the decision by Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust (WCTT) not to run the event due to financial difficulties.
The London Borough of Merton and the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) had tried to rescue the festival following the Trust’s withdrawal, but there were significant hurdles that could not be overcome.
Keith Davis, Director of Customer Services & Development, said: “It is very unfortunate but, despite our best efforts, we and our partners have not been able to save this year’s Cannizaro festival.
“At this late stage, it has been extremely difficult to secure companies that would supply equipment, skilled staff, quality performers, goods and other services. We have received pledges of sponsorship but there were still significant gaps that just could not be bridged.
“We have all agreed that it is better to maintain the quality reputation of the festival for future years than to rush through a sub standard production this summer. It is disappointing for everyone concerned, as I’m sure it is for the people who planned to attend, but the spirit of the festival is alive and well and it will be back.”
As previously reported, Merton has been instrumental in brokering a deal between ATG and WCTT to save Wimbledon Theatre after it ran into financial difficulties. The financial situation forced the Trust and the Theatre to call off this year’s Cannizaro Festival.
