Secure yourself a warm and safe sleep

Merton residents will be able to sleep tight this winter as Merton Trading Standards, Age Concern Merton and the London Fire Brigade are offering free electric blanket safety tests, on Monday 22 September at St Marks Family Centre, Mitcham, and Friday 26 September 2003 at Merton Link.

The free safety checks aim to catch old or damaged blankets, which currently cause more than 5000 fires every year. Research has also shown that electric blankets over 10 years old are responsible for 99 per cent of the fires caused by electric blankets.

Merton residents who wish to have their electric blanket checked, should make an appointment by calling 020 8545 4018. Officers from Age Concern Merton and the Fire Brigade will be present at the tests, offering advice and answering questions about electric blankets and fire safety in general.

Councillor Linda Kirby, Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Quality, said: “Don’t miss this opportunity to have your electric blanket checked for free as it could save your life. I encourage residents to book an appointment today, and secure a safe and worry-free night’s sleep.”

Unfortunately only residents who have booked appointments will be able to get their blankets tested. Please contact 020 8545 4018 for further information.
