Merton Council offers safety advice for firework parties

As firework season is just around the corner Merton Council has some important tips on how to make sure celebrations run smoothly.

Buying fireworks
· Only buy fireworks from a legitimate retailer – by law fireworks must not be sold to under 18’s
· Check the fireworks you buy are suitable for the size of your garden and conform to the British Standards (BS 7114)
· Read the instructions in daylight and always follow them

Things you will need on the night
· Torch for checking instructions
· Bucket of water
· Eye protection and gloves
· Bucket of soft earth to stick fireworks in
· Suitable supports for catherine wheels, proper launches for rockets

The display
· Inform neighbours and be aware of their concerns
· Don’t set off noisy fireworks late at night and never after 11pm
· Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks
· Light fireworks at arm’s length with a taper
· Stand well back and keep others back
· Never go back to a lit firework
· Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them
· Always supervise children
· Store fireworks in a metal box, kept closed between use
· Keep pets indoors

After the display
· Use tongs or gloves to collect spent fireworks

Sparklers
· Unsuitable for children under 5
· Light one at a time
· Wear gloves when holding sparklers
· Put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water

Bonfires
· Should be at least 18 metres (60ft) away from houses, trees, hedges, fences or sheds
· Use domestic firelighters
· Never use petrol, paraffin or other flammable liquids.

Merton’s annual bonfire and fireworks events will take place in Morden Park on Saturday 1 November and Wimbledon Park on Wednesday 5 November. Gates will open at 5.15pm; a first performance will take place at 6.30pm and a second performance at 8.15pm. Performances will consist of a spectacular array of colourful fireworks, choreographed to popular music, and there will also be side stalls and fairground rides staying open until 10.30pm.
