Fly-tipping van crushed

Merton Environmental Enforcement Team crushed a seized van at 11am this morning, formerly used for fly-tipping.

The van was seized following a tip-off from a resident who witnessed the vehicle being used for fly-tipping on Clive Road, Colliers Wood in June. Further incidents were witnessed in August.

Efforts to trace the owners from the registration plate were fruitless. A warrant to seize the van was applied for by the Environmental Agency on behalf of London Borough of Merton, in joint operation by the Met Police, the LBM Enforcement Team and David Shepherd of the Environment Agency, which resulted in the vehicle being seized on 28 August 2003.

As no one had claimed the first van within 28 days of the seize, the van was crushed at 11am this morning at Willow Lane Industrial Estate in Mitcham.

Councillor Linda Kirby, Cabinet Member for Environmental Quality, said: “This is an outstanding piece of work by the Enforcement Team and higlights our commitment to combating fly-tipping and other anti social behaviour in the Borough.”

Anyone who witnesses fly tipping in their area should try and record as much information as possible and contact Merton’s Enforcement Team on 020 8274 4902.
