Recent reports from Merton residents show that there have been incidents of bogus refuse collectors asking for tips from residents in the borough.

Genuine refuse collectors are council employees and are covered by the same rules of conduct as all council staff. All council staff know that they are also not allowed to request or solicit for tips in any way. In any case, all small gifts received have to be declared and staff are NOT allowed to accept cash.

Anyone who is approached by someone saying they are a refuse collector, ask for their ID, do not tip them, and pass the information to the Council’s waste helpline staff. Reports of any such incidents should be reported to the Police immediately.
