Road work warnings

Night time resurfacing work will be carried out by Merton Council in Western Road, Mitcham during two separate phases in May to replace remove and replace a significant depth of old and misshapen surfacing.

Merton Council is currently enhancing the length of highway between Lavender Avenue and Mitcham Town Centre. This includes replacing the road surface, which will provide a smoother ride, a more skid resistant surface and generate less road noise and vibration. By carrying out the work at night Merton Council hopes to keep disruption to a minimum, however there will inevitably be heavy traffic during these works and road users are advised to avoid the area if possible.

The two phases of works in Western Road will take place as follows:
· 9pm – 2am, Tuesday 4 May to Friday 7 May
Western Road will close between the junction with Raleigh Gardens and Holborn Way and the junction with Love Lane. A signed diversion route will direct traffic along Church Road. Local traffic will be able to travel along Western Road from Church Road up to Love Lane and use other local roads such as Lavender Avenue and Bond Road for access.

· 7.30pm – 2am, Monday 10 May to Friday 21 May
An alternating one-way system controlled by traffic lights will take place between Love Lane and Lavender Avenue over a two-week period. Delays will be incurred by any traffic travelling along Western Road. Local traffic should use alternative roads for access where possible. The resurfacing work will start at the Mitcham Town Centre end and proceed towards Lavender Avenue.

When the works are being carried out directly outside properties vehicle access will be difficult. Residents have been sent letters to give advance warning of the works and have been advised to make alternative parking arrangements for those evenings.

Other improvements to this stretch of highway will include the repair of broken drains, the upgrade of entranceways and pedestrian crossings and the refurbishment of the footway.
