A Merton primary school is to celebrate the opening of its new state-of-the-art facilities with a commemorative day.
Sacred Heart Primary School in Burlington Road, New Malden will mark the opening of its new school building on June 18 with a huge party for both children and parents. The new building will be blessed during a special mass conducted by Bishop Tripp. The day will culminate with a performance by the children.
The new building will house eight classrooms, four group rooms as well as two libraries. There is also a new ICT suite, assembly hall and kitchen. In addition, the music room has been fully renovated, as has the staff room. Provision has also been included for an activity room for every two classes in both Foundation and Year One.
Other innovations include landscaping the front of the school to allow for both tarmac and grass play areas and the creation of further outdoor play areas for Reception and Year One.
The celebration will mark the culmination of five years of planning and extensive building works. Sacred Heart Parish, Merton Local Education Authority and the Department for Education and Skills are responsible for the improvements which have cost £2.3million. Additional fund-raising is now underway to furnish the play areas with suitable equipment and games.
Councillor David Chung, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning said:
“I am delighted to see the wonderful new facilities at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Primary School. They are testament to the benefits to be gained from working in partnership with each other.”
