New Malden played host to a fiesta of football as the Merton Out of School football tournament kicked off.
The teams came together from across the borough to contest the cup at Goals Soccer Centre in New Malden on April 1.
Organised by the Merton Out of School Network, the competition was open to eight to eleven year olds of both sexes and any ability. The day was so successful, plans are already underway for a new tournament next year.
The teams involved in the inaugural competition were: Three teams from the A&R Out of School clubs, which are based in across Merton – Aragon School in Morden, Raynes Park Methodist Church and St Barnabus Church Hall in Mitcham. Two teams from the Penguin Out of School club, based at Gorringe Park Primary in Mitcham and the St Helier Out of School club, based at the St Helier Methodist Church which serves children from Malmesbury School in Morden, St Theresa’s and Abbotsbury schools in Morden.
The Merton Out of School Network was set up in partnership with the Merton Voluntary Service Council in 2004. Tracey Podger is the Provider Support Officer.
“Initially the clubs were quite isolated, but by running inter-club events like this, we are able to build positive relationships,” explains Tracey. “The children were really enthusiastic and the team spirit shone threw. I hope this is just the beginning.”
The final was contested by two of the A & R teams with a goal in the last minute of extra time settling the match. Action pictures and the presentation of the trophy are attached.
