Cricket girls take silver

Merton’s Under 14 Girls Cricket Team made history in their first appearance at the London Youth Games on Saturday 6 May.

The girls joined other teams from London boroughs at Lords Cricket Ground for the quarter and semi finals, where they won over Harrow and Bromley. They eventually claimed a silver medal after narrowly losing to Redbridge in the final. Former England captain, Mike Gatting, presented medals and a silver plaque to the team at the match’s conclusion.

The team was captained by Taylor Torr and included her sister Malory, Priyanka Kanani, Beth Kerins, Roberta McAllister and sisters Claudia and Edie Kelly.

Nicola Ryan, Merton’s Youth Games Co-ordinator, said:

“The girls were brave and brilliant, this is a wonderful achievement for the borough and for girls cricket.

“I hope to recruit more girls to the game before next year’s London Youth Games.”

A series of cricket training sessions will begin next month for girls aged eight years and over. For more information, call Merton Leisure Development on 020 8545 4738.
