Summer reading rewarded

On Saturday 7 October, a special prizegiving was held in the Wimbledon Odeon for participants in the 2006 Summer Reading Challenge.

Prizes were sponsored by various local organizations including Wimbledon Odeon, Books Etc, Wimbledon Lawn and Tennis Club, Chessington World, Polka Theatre, Wimbledon Books and the Kinetic Theatre Company.

St Mary’s Catholic School won the school prize and Kinetic Theatre Company will perform “The Hospital Force” at the school on Monday 30 October, 9.30am.

The special guest speaker was children’s author Chris Powling, who also signed books for the children. The event ended with the showing of the film Stormbreaker.

This year 2281 Merton children participated in the Summer Reading Challenge this year – up by 39% from 2005. The theme was The Reading Mission, a spy themed reading adventure where children were challenged to read six different books over the summer to become a Reading Agents.

Councillor Maurice Groves, Cabinet Member for Community Services said:

“Congratulations to everyone who completed their Secret Reading Mission. It is wonderful to see so many Merton children enjoying books at their local libraries.”
