Merton supports Bishopsford School

Merton Council has confirmed its continuing support for Bishopsford School in a letter to the Minister for Schools, Lord Andrew Adonis this week.

Following a suggestion from Siobhan McDonagh M.P, that the school should become an academy school, the council has written to Lord Adonis to say it is fully behind the Headteacher, Governors and teachers and is highly committed to rapid change and improvement at Bishopsford. There are no current plans to create an academy at Bishopsford.

Debbie Shears, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said: ‘A new headteacher joined the school last year, bringing direction, leadership and aspiration and a proven track record in turning around poor performance.

‘An Ofsted inspection came very soon after his arrival and although the school was issued with a notice to improve, we are confident that with renewed leadership, close support from the Council and external assistance from London Challenge, the school will make progress.

‘Merton Council is determined that our secondary schools strategy considers the future direction of all schools, rather than ‘fixing’ schools one by one.’
