Government civil servants visited Merton last week to learn about the workings of local Government using Merton as a showcase authority.
The day included a tour of the borough. Government officials met with Merton’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Samantha George, Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Commission, Councillor Peter Southgate and other council officers to gain insight about Merton and local government. This gave the Council the opportunity to challenge perceptions of how local authorities operate.
Government officials were from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Merton’s Deputy Leader, Councillor Samantha George said:
“This was a good opportunity for staff working in Central Government to gain understanding about how local authorities work and to help fill any gaps they may have in their knowledge. I hope this course has helped our guests understand the role local authorities play in delivering front line services to the local community’.
