Help with Council Tax for over 60s in need

Merton residents aged 60 or over are being reminded of the ways the council can help them meet their housing and council tax commitments.

Special conditions are in place if older residents are on a low income and receive Pension Credit.

This means rent and council tax charges could be reduced.

Merton Council has been working with the Pension Service to identify people who may have been missing out on the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

To be eligible people must be:

· A resident in the accommodation they are making the claim for

· Liable for rent or council tax or both

Councillor Margaret Brierly, Cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Services, said: “Some people who are eligible for benefits may not be aware that there is help available to them. Merton Council is putting its residents first and trying to ensure they know what rebates and discounts apply to them.”

Council tax demands will be posted this month.
