Merton comes top at the London Youth Games

Merton gymnast Alice Matthews won the girls’ artistic gymnastics competition held at Goresbrooke Sports Centre (Dagenham) last month. Scoring 13.45 on the vault, 11.70 on the bars, 11.85 on the beam and 11.65 on the floor, her total score was 48.65 putting her in first place in a competition of over 100 gymnasts across London.

Merton Diving Team scooped an impressive fifth place against the 24 boroughs that entered the diving competition at the Hornchurch Sports Centre. The team was made up of four young divers from Merton School of Diving and Trampolining.

Diver Alexander Harrison was fourth out of 15 in the senior boys event, while in the senior girls competition Sophie Mee came fifth out of 22.

In the junior event, Athena Lewis-Gkogka and Daniel Gorsuch, came tenth in the girls and boys events, respectively. Twenty-three girls took part in the girls’ competition and 19 boys in the male one.

Councillor Maurice Groves, Cabinet Member for Community Services, says: “Merton Council congratulates the young athletes who achieved such great results in the London Youth Games. I encourage all the young people in the borough to practise some kind of sport as part of an healthy lifestyle.”
