Merton youth get insight into construction

Young people from Merton had the opportunity to gain an insight into construction careers at a Connaught Partnerships “Meet the Professionals” event with Merton Council yesterday.

The event, held at Connaught’s regional head office in Crawley, saw around 20 students participating in workshops to encourage and facilitate a successful career in construction and housing services.

Young people from Merton were invited to attend the event, following Connaught’s construction contract with Merton Council to refurbish the Insight Advice and Information Centre for Young People. The Insight Centre provides a one-stop-shop for young people to get advice, guidance and support and is run in conjunction with Connexions, Threshold Housing and Merton and Sutton PCT. The refurbishment has resulted in a vast improvement to facilities and increased membership.

The “Meet the Professionals” day profiled key construction roles including Health and Safety, Compliance, Estimating and Business Development, giving the students an opportunity to interact with the professionals currently doing their ideal job.

Connaught’s HR team was also on hand to help students draft their CV’s, search for their ideal job, complete a job application and pick up top tips on preparing for interviews.

Councillor Debbie Shears, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said: “As a council we’re always exploring ways to encourage young people to think about their future and plan for their careers. The “Meet the Professionals” day is one of the many events available to young people in Merton that supports this and we’re delighted to have been involved.”

Danny Nash, Account Director for Connaught Partnerships in Merton, said: “The Meet the Professionals day is a great opportunity for our staff to share some of their career experiences with young people who aspire to the same role. Events like this help to boost young people’s confidence by giving them vital skills that enable them to take the necessary steps to further themselves.”
