Celebrating Independence

Students with learning difficulties and disabilities received their Towards Independence certificates early this month at the celebrations of achievement event held at Merton Adult Education centre in Whatley Avenue.
Merton Adult Education in partnership with Merton Council runs 60 courses for students with disabilities, learning and mental health difficulties, hearing, visual and physical impairments. Courses aim to give students of all abilities the opportunity to achieve personal and social development by enhancing their self-esteem.
91 students with learning difficulties received certificate of completion for ASDAN Towards Independence courses such as Using Computers, Independent Living Skills, Yogacize, Wider World, Meal Preparation & Cookery, Money, Business Enterprise and Vocational Training. For many of these students this was their first academic certificate.
Merton Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, Cllr Maurice Groves said: “Congratulations to all the students of the Towards Independence who worked really hard to complete their course. These courses are great fun and offer a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and develop new skills.
