Cupid’s arrow strikes at the heart of Merton business

As Cupid’s busiest day approaches, Merton Council is getting local businesses and services together on Friday 13 February for a Valentine ‘love in’.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day itself the council is calling on residents to demonstrate their love for Merton and for the borough’s local businesses.

Along with the council, Safer Merton and local businesses will be doing their bit to celebrate Valentine’s Day and show their affection for the borough.

Safer Neighbourhood teams and the Reassurance Bus will be outside the Civic Centre throughout the day. Neighbourhood wardens will be on hand to give advice on ways to cut crime and will be marking up individuals’ property whilst fire officers will be informing people how they can get a free smoke alarm. Council staff will be handing out reusable bags and providing information on road safety during the day.

No Valentine celebrations would be complete without some tender loving care so the council has invited healing hands expert, Marianne Zeck, to give free massages to residents in need of relaxation.

Morden Library is planning a special display of romantic books and DVDs on the big day and inside the Civic Centre there will be plenty of information for those wanting to take better care of their hearts and quit smoking. Virgin Active will also be there with one of their exercise bikes for people to try out.

Merton Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Diane Neil Mills said: “I would encourage everyone to come along and join in the activities at the Civic Centre. Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to put a little romance in our lives whilst also finding out more about what our wide variety of local businesses have to offer.

‘We recognise that the current economic climate means times are difficult for everyone, and this goes for Merton’s businesses too. However, by showing a little love, especially towards businesses in the borough, residents will be helping to support the local economy and the many jobs that go with it.

‘Hopefully Valentine’s Day will be the start of a long and prosperous love affair between Merton’s residents and local businesses that will last all year round.’
