Merton brings forward expenses publication

Merton Council has just published the allowances and expenses for all its councillors over the last financial year, earlier than usual to reflect current public concern over the issue.

Each year every council reports on the allowances and expenses paid to their members and this year (2008-2009) Merton has brought forward publication allowing residents to see more clearly how the system works.

In line with its drive towards greater openness and transparency, as well as publishing these details earlier than usual, Merton will now also be among a handful of councils around the country to make councillors’ expenses claims available online month by month.

Chief executive of Merton Council Ged Curran said:
‘ The allowances local councillors receive are very minimal compared to MPs but the council understands that residents want transparency and this latest move will give them that.

‘Merton Council is committed to providing its residents with the best value for money possible and what residents will see is that claims from their councillors are very few, and that the allowances they receive are among the lowest of neighbouring boroughs.’

The 2008/09 allowances list for all 60 councillors can be found on Merton Council’s website http://www.merton.gov.uk/councillors. Monthly details of members’ expenses will also be available on this page.
