As the summer holidays approach, Merton’s youngsters can stay fit and cool with free swimming for 16 year olds and under.
Also available to the over 60s, the free swimming scheme was launched earlier this year and allows swimmers to take advantage of the council’s pools without spending a single penny. Those interested should register at their local leisure centre.
Merton Council’s cabinet member for environment and leisure services Councillor David Simpson said, “With the summer holidays just around the corner swimming is a great way to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is also an important skill for life. We are always looking to put the needs of our residents first and provide them with good value for money recreational activities. Our investment in providing this scheme in Merton will give local people the opportunity to get fit and have some fun.”
Note to Editor
Merton Council invested its grant of around £300,000 from central Government in providing this service at its three leisure centres for the next two years to encourage youngsters and people over the age of 60 to participate in sport and active recreation and to increase their levels of health and well being. Sutton and Merton Primary Care Trust also contributed £30,000 over two years to the initiative.
Residents will need to provide proof of age and their membership card at the leisure centre reception desk. To register online for membership visit http://www.gll.org
