Mitcham Carnival kicks off summer 2010

Mitcham Carnival is set to kick off summer with its Football Fever theme at Three Kings Piece on Saturday 12 June just a day into the World Cup.

Merton is gearing itself up for a weekend of magnificent celebrations including music, dance and an array of brightly coloured costumes and floats. The parade starts at 12.30 on Figges Marsh and will arrive at Three Kings Piece at 1pm.

Three Kings Piece will boast an arena where Merton’s new Mayor Councillor Oonagh Moulton will judge and announce the winner of the float competition. She will be looking for creative interpretation of the football fever theme and award a cup to the best one.

Visitors to the carnival will be able to marvel at the horse display team, dance groups and stilt-walkers as well as enjoy a fun fair, refreshments and a variety of stalls. The Mitcham mini games and a little league football final will ensure the festivities continue late into the afternoon.

Mayor of Merton, Councillor Oonagh Moulton said: “The carnival has been going from strength to strength over the past years, and this year’s event promises to be excellent fun. There is going to be something for the whole family and every age group. We hope as many people as possible can take part as it’s going to be a wonderful day with plenty of things to do and see.’

Merton Council’s cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said: “With the first England match in the evening against the USA, there is going to be a great deal of excitement and we really want to catch the moment as the World Cup gets underway by having a Football Fever theme. I hope to see as many families and friends as possible come along to Mitcham and enjoy the carnival festivities.”
