Leader of Merton Council Councillor Stephen Alambritis and cabinet member for community and culture Councillor Martin Whelton witnessed AFC Wimbledon’s victorious win at the weekend. The nail-biting 4-3 penalty shootout win against Luton Town sees the club promoted to the Football League since the club was re-formed in 2002.
The councillors travelled up by coach with the fans to the City of Manchester stadium on Saturday, lending their support to the team, which is working its way up the ranks of UK football.
Councillor Alambritis said: “It’s fantastic to see AFC Wimbledon back where they belong, in the Football League. We are in talks with the club to organise a celebration of their achievements with the details due to come on shortly”
Councillor Martin Whelton said: “As a supporter of Wimbledon since I was a child, this is an amazing moment in the history of the club and I am proud to have been at the match to celebrate in their success. AFC Wimbledon have done a brilliant job in just nine years to get back to their rightful place in the Football League and my congratulations goes to all the team on their achievement.”
Commercial director and co-founder Ivor Heller said: “This was unbelievably exciting and testament to the dedication of our players. We could not be where we are today without the dedication of the management, players, staff and volunteers at the club.”
