Merton Adult Education (MAE) named Diane Wiltshire as the Adult Learner of the Year 2011 at a ceremony held last week (24 June).
The Whatley Avenue campus celebrated mature students’ achievements and experiences at their annual awards ceremony, attended by Deputy Mayor Councillor Chris Edge and Merton’s head of community education Yvonne Tomlin.
Diane completed the International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC) qualification in aromatherapy massage. Over three years she has successfully completed credits in beauty, massage, reflexology and aromatherapy. As well as her studies, Diane was nominated for her strength and determination for continuing her studies alongside supporting her family through a difficult time.
Dawn Spragg, Diane’s aromatherapy massage tutor praised her student and said: “Diane has been at the college for 3 years now and her progression has been an inspiration and a beacon to all. She came to MAE so quiet and shy, with a distinct lack of confidence. I have had the honour of watching her bloom into an enquiring, broad thinking and perceptive individual.
“Diane is a student whom every time I teach reminds me why I do my job and why I’m so passionate about teaching. She is an honour to support and teaches me as much as I teach her at times about strength and fortitude in the face of adversity.”
Merton Council cabinet member for education, Councillor Peter Walker said “Students like Diane are a credit to our college and show how much people of all ages can achieve through education and determination. I’d like to congratulate all of the award winners and wish them well for the future”.
