Residents in Pollards Hill will be taking part in fun and games on Saturday 13 August as part of Merton’s cultural Olympiad.
From 1pm until 5pm on Donnelly Green, Pollards Hill, residents and families can take part in a community fun day supported by Merton Council, Commonside Community Development Trust and MOAT Housing.
Highlights include street dancing, stilt walking, army assault course, face painters and a bouncy castle. The Polka Theatre will be running drama workshops and Blendavenda, a cycle-powered smoothie bar, will be making delicious drinks. Dance and music will be provided by the Aim High Dance Academy and the winners from the South Park Gardens music festival. Mini sports games, badge making and other free activities are on offer for all children.
Cultural Olympiad events have been taking place across the country since 2008 to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The events are designed to give everyone in the UK a chance to be part of London 2012 and inspire creativity across all forms of culture, especially among young people. Merton’s event last year was held in Cottenham Park, Raynes Park and over 500 people joined in the fun.
Cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said: “Merton is proud to be a host borough and with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games only one year away, the Cultural Olympiad is a great way of involving the community and getting them excited about the games. The day will also offer many opportunities to participate in the huge variety of sport and art events taking place and it promises to be an exciting day.”
