Merton Council is calling on residents to apply to become a volunteer Older People’s Champion.

The successful applicant will work to raise the status and profile of over 50s in the borough. Priorities may include identifying and challenging age discrimination and ensuring issues of concern relating to transport, leisure, education and more are addressed.

Residents who are interested in becoming an Older People’s Champion should apply by writing why they are suitable for the role in no more than 600 words. The deadline to apply is 14 October and applications can be submitted by post or email.

For the first time ever, there are more over 65-year-olds than there are 16-year-olds in Britain. Here in Merton, the number of over 65-year-olds in the borough is set to increase 13 per cent by 2020, with 18 per cent more over 85-year-olds by 2019. The introduction of this role demonstrates the council’s commitment to prioritising the needs of older and vulnerable people.

Chair of the Healthier Communities and Older People’s Overview and Scrutiny Panel, Councillor Suzanne Evans said: “This role is a fantastic opportunity for someone passionate about older people’s rights to get involved with decision-making. We are looking for someone with the time and energy to make a difference to older people in the borough and be proud to represent the over 50s.”
