Libraries across the borough are hosting practical advice sessions on winter energy saving next week (7-11 November) organised by Merton Seniors Forum.
With fuel prices rising year on year, Merton Seniors Forum and library volunteers will be offering guidance and tips for Merton’s older people to help reduce their gas and electricity bills.
Drop in sessions will be held at Pollards Hill, Morden, Mitcham and Wimbledon Libraries across the week, where older people can get information and advice on saving money and energy. Other relevant organisations will have advice and information for older people during these sessions.
National advice is to compare prices between energy providers to find the best deal, often buying gas and electricity from the same supplier (dual fuel) can work out cheaper. Paying by Direct Debit and looking at energy usage can also avoid big bills over the winter period.
Cabinet member for communities and culture, Councillor Martin Whelton said: “It’s important that older people across the borough get the best information on how to reduce their energy bills, along with advice and guidance on energy use and keeping warm as we approach winter. I welcome the support of Merton Seniors Forum and other organisations for these sessions which are taking place in Merton libraries. Our libraries play a key role in providing information and helpful advice to residents of all ages on a range of different topics along with being hubs for the local community.”
Myrtle Agutter of Merton Seniors Forum said: ‘Older people are going to be very hard hit this winter with a reduction in the Winter Fuel Allowance and the huge rises in energy prices. It is important that whilst we continue to campaign for an adequate Winter Fuel Allowance, easier and clearer access to suitable tariffs and better regulated energy companies we must also try to help older people stay warm and well this winter. These sessions are offering practical help that we hope will make a difference.’
