Official figures just out from the Department of Education show Merton’s average 5+ A*- C GCSE grades including English and Maths are above the national average.
The borough’s 5+ GCSEs A* – C grades including English and Maths are the best ever achieved and beat last year’s results, maintaining a year-on-year improvement.
Results also show traditionally low and middle achieving students making progress in their education at twice the national rate.
Merton Council cabinet member for education, Councillor Peter Walker said: “I am very pleased to see these best ever grades which are well above the national average.
“Our schools continue to improve year after year and great credit must go to all our teachers who are working hard to raise standards in the borough.
“Improving the education of all children, including those who have underperformed in the past, is vital to these young people’s lives. That is why we in Merton are investing so heavily to expand our schools to ensure we can accommodate and teach all our children in the very best conditions.
“I am determined that we continue to improve our standards across all our schools.”
